The year 2024 has been marked by elections around the world. This summer, voters across the European Union elected a new European Parliament, which led to the formation of a new European Commission; France held snap parliamentary elections but has yet to form a government; and the U.K. elected a Labour government after 14 years of Conservative rule. On September 1, two eastern German states held regional elections—with a third to follow later in the month. And in November, Americans will decide whether to return former President Donald Trump to the White House or elevate Joe Â鶹ÊÓ´«Ã½Ãâ·Ñ¹Û¿´â€™s vice president, Kamala Harris, to the Oval Office. How will these elections—and ongoing political uncertainty—affect key aspects of U.S.-European relations, including the NATO alliance, policy toward Russia, and Ukraine’s future? What is the impact on U.S.-EU economic relations and tensions over each other’s approaches to China?

On September 16, the Foreign Policy program at Brookings and the (CFR) collaborated to convene a panel of experts to discuss the foreign, security, and economic policy challenges facing democratic governments in Europe and the United States; how key issues are playing out in elections and their aftermaths; and what is at stake for trans-Atlantic relations across a range of policy areas. This was be the first in a series of virtual events cosponsored by Brookings and CFR in the lead-up to Election Day.
