Carlo Bastasin

Carlo Bastasin is a nonresident senior fellow in the聽Center on the United States and Europe at Brookings. He is also a professor of European economic governance for post-graduate courses at LUISS University in Rome and a senior fellow and member of the scientific council at the LUISS Institute for European Analysis and Policy (Leap). Before joining Leap, he was one of the founders of the School of European Political Economy, a think tank in Rome gathering Italian and European scholars in applied economic research. In 2008-2009 he was a visiting fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Bastasin graduated from Bocconi University in Milan and after several years in economic research he moved to Berlin as a foreign correspondent for the Italian financial newspaper Il Sole-24 Ore. In 1998 he became deputy editor-in-chief of La Stampa, and in 2006 he returned to economic research while still working as an editorialist. Bastasin鈥檚 commentary has been published by several European media outlets; currently he is a regular commentator for La Repubblica.

Bastasin is the author of several books. His latest, with Gianni Toniolo, is 鈥The Rise and Fall of the Italian Economy鈥 (Cambridge University Press, 2023). His account of the eurozone crisis, 鈥Saving Europe: Anatomy of a Dream,鈥 was published by Brookings Institution Press in 2015. He has also published 鈥淒eutschland von aussen鈥 (Fischer Verlag, 1998) in German and several books in Italian: 鈥淒estra e Sinistra鈥 (Bocconi-Egea, 2007), 鈥淰iaggio al termine dell鈥橭ccidente鈥 (LUISS University Press, 2019), and 鈥淟a strada smarrita鈥 (Laterza, 2020, with Gianni Toniolo).

His research currently focuses on political economy applied to Europe, the European Union, Italy, Germany, democracy and governance, and the global economy.
